The Psychology of Conversion

As one goes up the hierarchy of nature, one finds an interesting capacity for adaption.  H2O is capable of assuming the three forms of ice, water, and steam; plants have adaptability only to seasons and local conditions; animals have additional powers of moving from place to place, but each one of them still remains more or less fixed in type.  Man has the greatest capacity for change of all, because he who is born of the flesh can also be born of the spirit; he who is only a creature can become a Child of God.  Man alone is convertible.  He alone can become something he is not.  Conversion does not mean a further development in the natural order, but a generation into a supernatural order.  The body is alive because of the soul, but the soul is dead when it has not that higher life which God alone can give.  “Unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
